This is the third time I’ve written a blog about this, which probably says a lot about me. Every work anniversary rolls around and I get a little reflective and maybe just a tiny bit dramatic about personal growth.
Three years ago, I stepped into a completely different world.
I went from dental… to law.
Fast forward three years…
I recently won a marketing award in the legal industry.
Me.
Which still makes me laugh because I don’t have a marketing degree. I don’t have some secret formula. I just genuinely enjoy meeting people and building relationships. The woman who walked into a law firm knowing absolutely nothing about the legal industry. No experience. No plan. Now somehow working across three law firms, building relationships, and learning something new every day.
What’s even crazier is that when I started, I didn’t know the first thing about networking.
I remember walking into my first Chamber event with sweaty palms, wondering what I was supposed to say and convinced everyone else knew exactly what they were doing.
I quickly learned something that changed everything: networking isn’t about selling.
It’s about relationships.
It’s about meeting people, learning their stories, finding common ground, and showing up consistently. Sometimes business comes from that. Sometimes it doesn’t. But the relationships always matter.
So I kept showing up.
I attended lunches, networking events, happy hours, ribbon cuttings and meetings. I met incredible people, made friends and became part of a community I never expected to find.
Yet somehow, that led to a marketing award. Trust me, I was shocked too.
Two and a half years ago, True Estate Planning was born, and I’ve been lucky enough to watch it grow through every milestone, challenge, and win. Being part of that journey has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.
But here’s what surprises me most:
The biggest change wasn’t the job.
It was me.
I didn’t realize how stuck I was until I wasn’t anymore. There wasn’t a dramatic moment or breaking point. Just a slow acceptance of “this is fine” until one day I realized I wanted more than fine.
And I think that’s something a lot of people can relate to.
The biggest changes in life rarely happen when everything feels easy. More often, they begin with uncertainty, second-guessing yourself, and doing something that feels a little scary.
Walking into that first networking event was uncomfortable.
Sending that first message to Kelly was uncomfortable.
Starting a career in an industry where I knew almost nothing was uncomfortable.
But every one of those moments opened a door I never would have found if I had stayed where I was comfortable. Looking back, the things that made me nervous ended up leading to opportunities, friendships, and experiences I never could have planned for.
So if you’re in a season where things feel a little stuck or a little too comfortable, consider this your sign.
Apply for the job.
Start the business.
Take the class.
Make the call. Send the message.
Do the scary thing.
Because if you don’t try, you’ll never know what might be waiting on the other side.
You don’t always need a perfect plan.
Sometimes you just need a brave first step.
Three years ago, I took one.
And it changed everything.
