The Power of Starting Again – And How You Can Too

I want to share how much can change when you listen to that small voice inside urging you to take a leap. Two years ago – on June 12, 2023 – I took a leap into something completely new. I started a role that, at the time, felt a little outside my comfort zone but incredibly full of possibility. Fast forward to today, and I can honestly say I’m still just as excited (maybe even more so) than I was on day one.

Back in April of 2023, I saw a Facebook post from a friend, Kelly Spann, about a job opening at her law firm. My first thought? “No way.” It was a law firm – and all I knew was dental. But I heard a small voice inside me whispering, “What if you just went for it?” – At first, I ignored it. After all, I had a steady job, a familiar routine, and coworkers who felt like family. But that voice didn’t go away – it got louder. And eventually, I listened.

Today, I want to share just how much can change when you trust that quiet inner nudge – the one urging you to take a leap, even when the outcome feels uncertain. Somehow, I wasn’t worried. It all just felt right. Now, two years later, I’ve learned and grown in ways I never expected.

What I Learned

  • You’re never too old to start again.
    • Age brings perspective, discipline, and emotional intelligence.
  • Passion beats the perfect résumé.
    • When you’re genuinely excited about your work, people notice.
  • Being uncomfortable is part of the process.
    • I was the “new kid” again. I asked a lot of questions. I made mistakes.
  • Networking and public speaking:
    • Learning how to connect with business professionals and confidently discuss topics like franchise law, trademarks, and estate planning in front of a room full of people.
  • Financial management:
    • Handling billing, invoicing, and basic accounting tasks such as reconciling client accounts and trust accounts.
  • Technology skills:
    • Using legal practice management software and tools like Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Excel (not as fast as Kelly, but I get by!).

Not only did I find a career I love, but I also found myself again. That confidence, joy, and drive I thought I had lost? It came back – stronger than ever. And you know what? Starting over at 43 doesn’t feel like a detour. It feels like I finally got on the right road. I’m writing this for many reasons – but mostly, I hope it inspires someone who’s standing on the edge of a big decision. If that’s you, and you’re wondering if it’s too late, let me say this clearly:

It’s not.
You are not too old.
You are not too far behind.
And it is absolutely not too late to become who you’re meant to be.

Whatever your career – or life – transition looks like, surround yourself with support, stay curious, and trust yourself enough to take the leap. Sometimes, the best chapters come after the restart.
